Construction of new single-family homes will be off to a slow start next year, but activity will pick up in the second half of 2011, a Calgary housing conference was told Tuesday.

Lai Sing Louie, a Calgary-based economist with the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, said the main factor impacting home sales in this province is the number of people moving to Alberta. And that, in turn, depends on the economic health of the oilpatch.

Alberta will lead the country in economic growth in 2011, building on a resource-led rebound.
In its latest forecast released Wednesday, Scotiabank expects Alberta’s economy to expand 3.5 per cent, the most growth among the provinces. The cost of owning a home in Canada continued to climb in the second quarter, but homeowners may soon experience some temporary relief as house prices and some mortgage rates subside, according to a report released Monday.  The RBC Economics Research report found home ownership costs continued to rise in the second quarter of 2010, eroding affordability in most markets.
